Chapter 14, Problem 6IQ
Consider an example in which the M/m gene (for pigment production) is epistatic to the B/b gene (for deposition of pigment). Suppose that a dominant allele M is necessary for the production of the black pigment melanin; mm individuals are white. A dominant allele B results in the deposition of a lot of pigment in an animal’s hair, producing a black color. The genotype bb produces
gray hair, assuming the presence of at least one M allele. Two black animals heterozygous for both genes are bred. Fill in the following table for the offspring of this MmBb × MmBb cross.

A mutant allele in persons with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) causes death due to a lack of liver receptors for LDL. Susceptible persons have half the normal number of receptors, while other individuals have the normal number of receptors. In a phenotypically normal couple, the man had a female 1 cousin (on his father’s side) who died from FH; the woman had a maternal uncle with FH. a. Calculate the probability that neither of the couple might be susceptible. b. Calculate the probability that one of them might be susceptible, but the other is not. c. Calculate the probability that they will have an FH child if a test discloses that both of them are susceptible.
In mice, the A allele causes agouti fur, the AY allele causes yellow fur and is dominant to the A allele. The homozygous AY AY genotype is lethal. Why is the AYAY homozygous condition lethal?
The AY allele highly transcribes the merc gene which is lethal in a homozygous AYAY individual.
None of the other answers are correct.
The AY allele lacks an upstream merc gene which is required for normal embryonic development.
The AY allele contains a null mutation in the A gene, which is required for normal embryonic development.
The yellow pigment produced by A allele is required for survival.
There is an autosomal gene in cats that controls whether or not they also have white patches of fur (W = white spots, w= no white spots). Considering this along with the Orange gene (O0 and OB) from the previous question, and how it works, how many possible genotypes (using these 4 alleles) are there for cats that are orange, black, and white (in other words, calico)?

- The white Leghorn breed of chickens is homozygous for the dominant allele C, which produces colored feathers. However, this breed is also homozygous for the dominant allele I of an independently assorting gene that inhibits coloration of the feathers. Consequently, Leghorn chickens have white feathers. - Deafness is often inherited in humans as an autosomal recessive trait. Assume that this is the case here. Two severely deaf people meet and marry. They have four children and all of them have normal hearing. What is the MOST reasonable explanation for this outcome? Select one: a. The mutant allele for deafness shows variable expressivity and the normal children may have some hearing loss that is difficult to detect. b. Complementation has occurred in the children, indicating that the deafness mutations in the parents involved different genes. c. Deafness in this family is most likely caused by an epigenetic change such as the addition of methyl groups to the DNA. d. Deafness in this family shows a genetic maternal effect with the condition being determined by the genotype of the mother.arrow_forwardIn humans, four different blood types (A, B, AB, and O) are encoded by three alleles 1, 1, and i Individuals with both I and I alleles have blood type AB (red blood cells with both A and B antigens). Cystic fibrosis disease results from thick mucus accumulating in the lungs, which occurs in individuals who are homozygous for the CF allele. A pleiotropic effect is that heterozygous individuals are less likely to suffer from diarrhea. During the European cholera epidemics of the 1800s, resistance against diarrhea conferred a survival advantage such that approximately one in every 400 people in some European populations have cystic fibrosis. Fill in the table below with the genotype and allele frequencies for this 1 in 400 occurrence and provide the Hardy-Weinberg principle model you will be using. This paramutation is 100% penetrant. If a heterozygous rose is crossed with a homozygous red rose, what is the phenotypic ratio of the offspring? - At least two pairs of genes control eye color. Both pairs influence the production of the pigment, melanin, but act independently. One pair of alleles is B (Brown color; dominant) and b (blue color); the other pair is A (pigment production; dominant) and a (no pigment production; albino). The gene pair aais epistatic to (masks) B and b and produces the nonpigmented eyes of the albino. What is the typeof gene interaction that exists between the two gene pairs? Thedominant allele S has no effect on bristle number except in the presence of H, in which case a single S allele suppresses the hairless phenotype, thus restoringthe bristles. However, S is also lethal in homozygotes.a. What ratio of flies with normal bristles to hairlessindividuals would we find in the live progeny of across between two normal flies both carrying theH allele in the suppressed condition?b.
