Concept explainers
Fill in the following diagram of a cross of round-seeded and wrinkled-seeded pea plants. The round allele (R) is dominant; the wrinkled allele (r) is recessive.
To label: The given diagram that shows a cross between round-seeded and wrinkled-seeded pea plants.
Introduction: Gregor Johann Mendel who is known as the “Father of modern genetics” was the first person to conduct experiments on seven characters of pea plant. Based on these experiments, he framed three laws of inheritance, namely “Law of dominance, “Law of segregation”, and “Law of independent assortment.”

Explanation of Solution
The description of cross between the round-seeded and wrinkled-seeded pea plants from parental generation till F2 generation is given below:
- The parental generation includes the phenotypes that are round seeds and wrinkled seeds and their genetic makeup includes RR and rr, respectively.
- The gametes of the round and wrinkled seeds are R and r, respectively.
- These gametes fertilize to produce only round seeds in the F1 generation. This is because their genetic makeup is Rr and the allele for round seeds R is dominant over the wrinkled seeds r.
- The F1 round-seeded plants whose genotype is Rr segregate into R and r at the time of gamete formation and fuse together to give rise to F2 generation.
- The F2 generation gives rise to plants with different genotypes that are RR, Rr, and rr giving rise to both round and wrinkled seeds.
- The plants with round and wrinkled seeds are produced in the ratio 3 rounded:1 wrinkled seed plants, whereas their genetic makeup are found in the ratio 1RR: 2Rr: 1rr.
The ratios of a cross between round versus wrinkled seeds are as follows:
Phenotypic ratio of round versus wrinkled seeds is 3:1
Genotypic ratio of RR: Rr: rr is 1:2:1.

- Imagine that you are performing a cross involving seed color in garden pea plants. What traits would you expect to observe in the F1 offspring if you cross true-breeding parents with green seeds and yellow seeds? Yellow seed color is dominant over green. a. only yellow-green seeds b. only yellow seeds c. 1:1 yellow seeds:green seeds d. 1:3 green seeds:yellow seedsarrow_forwardin a certain plant, when individuals with blue flowers are crossed with individuals with blue flowers, only blue flowers are produced. plants with red flowers crossed with plants with red flowers sometimes produce only red flowers, although other times they produce either red or blue flowers. when plants with red flowers are crossed with plants with blue flowers, sometimes only red flowers are produced; other times either red or blue flowers are produced. which of the following is true? Red is incompletely dominant Red is recessive Red is dominant Red is codominant Blue is dominantarrow_forwardTwo sweat-pea plants, one with purple flowers and one with white flowers are crossed. This results in a 3:1 ratio of white:purple flowers. What were the genotypes of the parents? (Remember that flower color in sweet pea is an example of complementation)arrow_forward
- Thimble foxes cook color is controlled by a single gene while tail length is controlled by a separate Gene. Red coat is dominant to white coat and long tails are dominant to short tails, dominant is complete. Thimble fox one has a red coat and a long tail, its mother had a white coat and short tail. Thimble fox two has a white coat and long tail, its father had a short tail. Complete the punnets square for this cross and give the phenotypic ratio of the offspring. If there is a dominant allele for this first Street, place the gamete in the first give me a position. - In mice, short hair is dominant over long hair. If a heterozygous shorthaired male is crossed with a heterozygous female, what percentage of the offspring are predicted to have long hair? Group of answer choicesarrow_forwardGregor Mendel discovered the basis of heredity with his sweet pea plant experiments. In his studies, he determined that certain traits, such as pod color and pea shape, express complete dominance. A cross occurs between a plant with heterozygous yellow pods and wrinkled peas and a plant with green pods and heterozygous round peas. What is the probability that the offspring will exhibit recessive genes for both traits? A - 1/2B - 1/4C - 1/8D - 1/16arrow_forwardIn pea plants, inflated pod is governed by a completely dominant gene and a constricted pod by a recessive gene. Another independently segregating dominant gene produces green pod while recessive gene produces yellow pod. Give the genotypes of the parents in each of the crosses given below.arrow_forward
- Imagine a cross between a man and a woman having the following genotypes: Genotype of the Husband Genotype of the Wife Aa bb Dd Gg Hh RR Tt X Aa Bb Dd gg Hh Rr Tt Suppose, that the A allele exhibited incomplete dominance over the a allele and the T allele exhibited incomplete dominance over the t allele. In that instance, how many different phenotypes would be possible among the offspring of this same couple?arrow_forwardThe gene for flower color in snapdragons displays incomplete dominance. Snapdragons homozygous for the allele for red flower color have the genotype FRFR and have red flowers. Snapdragons homozygous for the allele for white flower color have the genotype FWFW and have white flowers. Heterozygous snapdragons, with the genotype FRFW, have pink flowers. A snapdragon that has pink flowers is crossed with a different snapdragon that has pink flowers.
