Chapter 14, Problem 66CR

Much interest in management circles has focused on how employee compensation is related to various company characteristics. The article “Determinants of R and D Compensation Strategies” (Personnel Psychology [1984]: 635–650) proposed a quantitative scale for y = Base salary for employees of high-tech companies. The following estimated multiple regression equation was then presented:

y ^ = 2.60 + 0.125 x 1 + 0.893 x 2 + 0.057 x 3 0.014 x 4

where x1, = Sales volume (in millions of dollars), x2 = Stage in product life cycles (1 = growth, 0 = mature), x3 = Profitability (%), and x4 = Attrition rate (%).

  1. a. There were n = 33 firms in the sample and R2 = 0.69. Is the fitted model useful?
  2. b. Predict base compensation for a growth stage firm with sales volume $50 million, profitability 8%, and attrition rate 12%.
  3. c. The estimated standard deviations for the coefficient estimates were 0.064, 0.141, 0.014, and 0.005 for b 1 , b 2 , b 3 , and b4 respectively. Should any of the predictors be deleted from the model? Explain.
  4. d. β2 is the difference between average base compensation for growth stage and mature stage firms when all other predictors are held fixed. Use the information in Part (c) to calculate a 95% confidence interval for β2.

Retail price data for n = 60 hard disk drives were recently reported in a computer magazine. Three variables were recorded for each hard disk drive: y = Retail PRICE (measured in dollars) X1 = Microprocessor SPEED (measured in megahertz) (Values in sample range from 10 to 40) x 2 = CHIP size (measured in computer processing units) (Values in sample range from 286 to 486) A first-order regression model. was fit to the data. 2. The instructor of a mathematics class collected data to see whether there is a correlation between the number of absences (X) and the student's score on the final exam (Y). The number of absences and score on the final exam were recorded. The following regression equation was obtained: Final score = 92.5317 – 3.7611 (Absences) a) (5 points) What would be the predicted final exam score for a student that had 10 absences? b) (5 points) The student from part (a) actually scored a 60 on the final exam. What is the residual for this student? Show all work.
If a correlation isr= 0.00, then SP = 0 and the regression equation is O Ý =X +0 O Ý =X + X O Ý =0 + X O Ý =Ÿ + 0
