Dalton’s law of partial pressures for a mixture containing three gases can be expressed as-

  Ptotal=P1+P2+P3

Where the pressures P1, P2, and P3 represents the partial pressures of each gas. Each gas is responsible for the total pressure.

  P1=n1RTV,P2=n2RTVandP3=n3RTV

       Ptotal=P1+P2+P3

       Ptotal=n1RTV+n2RTV+n3RTV

        =RTV(n1+n2+n3)

       =ntotal(RTV)

Where ntotal is the sum of the numbers of moles of the gases in the mixture.

Given Information: n1 = 1.0 mole, n2 = 2.0 mole and n3 = 3.0 mole

Total pressure = 10.0 atm

n1 and P1 for CO2

n2 and P2 for O2

n3 and P3 for N2

Total number of moles ‘ntotal’ = (1.0 + 2.0 + 3.0) mol = 6.0 mole

  Ptotal=ntotal(RTV)

  (RTV)=106atm/mol

The partial pressure of CO2 in the mixture:

  P1=n1(RTV)

     =1.0mol×106atm/mol

    =1.67atm

   =1.67×760torr

    =1266.7torr

The partial pressure of O2 in the mixture:

  P2=n2(RTV)

     =2.0mol×106atm/mol

     =3.33atm

    =3.33×760torr

     =2533.3torr

The partial pressure of N2 in the mixture:

  P3=n3(RTV)

    =3.0mol×106atm/mol

    =5.0atm

    =5.0×760torr

    =3800torr
