Explanation of Solution

In 1807 John Dalton put forward a generalization dealing with the pressure exerted by the mixture of two or more chemically non − reacting gases enclosed in a same vessel.

This is known as Dalton’s law of partial pressure.

  P=P1+P2+P3.......+Pn .

Where,

  P = total pressure.

  P1 = Partial pressure of gas 1

  P2 = Partial pressure of gas 2

  P3 = Partial pressure of gas 3

  Pn = Partial pressure for n gases.

According to Ideal gas equation

  PV=nRTPT=nTRTV

  n = number of moles.P = pressure exerted by gas V = volume of containerT = TemperatureR = Gas constant

For calculating the total pressure

  PT=nTRTV

  PT=P1+P2+P3nT=n1+n2+n3

  P1=n1RTV,P2=n2RTV,P3=n3RTVso,PT=(n1+n2+n3)RTV

For calculating partial pressure of each gas individually.

  P1PT=n1RTVnTRTV=P1PT=n1nTP1=n1nT×PT,P2=n2nT×PT,P3=n3nT×PT

Here, the three gases are

1) Nitrogen = 3.0 moles.

2) Oxygen = 2.0 moles

3) Carbon dioxide = 1.0 moles

Total moles ( nT ) = 3.0 + 2.0 + 1.0 = 6.0 moles

Total Pressure = 10 atm

Temperature = 250C

1) Partial pressure of Nitrogen

  P1PT=n1nT,P1=n1nT×PT

  P1=3.06.0×10=306=5atmP1=5atm

2) Partial pressure of Oxygen

  P2PT=n2nT,P2=n2nT×PT

  P2=2.06.0×10=206=3.3atmP2=3.3atm

3) Partial pressure of Oxygen

  P3PT=n3nT,P2=n3nT×PT

  P3=1.06.0×10=106=1.6atmP3=1.6atm

Therefore,

  P1=5atmP2=3.3atmP3=1.6atm

Now, we have to covert the values of partial pressure in Torr.

1atm = 760Torr

So, P1 = 5atm = 5×760 = 3800Torr

  P2 = 3.3atm = 3.3×760 = 2508Torr

  P3 = 1.6atm = 1.6×760 = 1216Torr

Conclusion

1) Partial pressure of N2=3800Torr

2) Partial pressure of O2=2508Torr

3) Partial pressure of CO2=1216Torr
