Chapter 13, Problem 66A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The volume of the system at STP is to be determined. Also, the partial pressure of each gas is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

The ideal gas equation for one mole gas is written as

  PV=RT

P= pressure of the gas

V= volume of the gas

R= gas constant

T = temperature of the gas

Dalton’s law also says that the entire pressure of the system is equal to the sum of the partial pressure of individual ones.

  PT=P1+P2+P3

Answer to Problem 66A

The volume of the mixture at STP is 32.4L

The partial pressure of gases He, Ar, and Ne are 0.864atm , 0.0173atm and 0.129atm respectively.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

Standard temperature, (T) = 0°C

Initial temperature in K= 0+273=273K

Standard pressure (P1) = 1atm

Mass of helium gas = 5g

The Molar mass of Helium gas = 4.0026g/mol

Mass of argon gas = 1g

The Molar mass of argon gas = 39.948g/mol

Mass of neon gas = 3.5g

The Molar mass of neon gas = 20.1797g/mol

Calculation:

To find the number of moles of He, Ar, and Ne atom:

Number of moles of helium is

  nHe=massmolarmassofHenHe=54.0026=1.249moles

The number of moles of argon is

  nAr=massmolarmassofArnAr=139.948=0.025moles

The number of moles of neon is

  nNe=massmolarmassofNenNe=3.520.1797=0.1734moles

To find the volume of the given atoms

  ccordingtoidealgasequationV=nRTPSo,VHe=nHeRTPVAr=nArRTPVNe=nNeRTPVtotal=VHe+VAr+VNe=nHeRTP+nArRTP+nNeRTP=(nHe+nAr+nNe)RTP=(1.249+0.025+0.1734)0.0821×2731Vtotal=32.4L

To find partial pressure of each gas:

  PHe=nHeRTV=1.249×0.0821×27332.4=0.864atm

For argon

  PAr=nArRTV=0.025×0.0821×27332.4=0.0173atm

For neon

  PNe=nNeRTV=0.1734×0.0821×27332.4=0.129atm

Conclusion

The total volume is 32.4L and the partial pressure of He is 0.0173atm , for Ar is 0.0173atm and for neon is 0.129atm
