Chapter 13, Problem 12PDQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The molecular and genetic basis of sickle cell anemia.
Introduction:
Sickle cell anemia is described as a condition, in which the RBCs (red blood cells) are shaped like sickles instead of a disc. These blood cells having a shape of a sickle get stuck in the blood vessels and block the flow of blood and also the distribution of oxygen to different body parts. This thus causes the most evident symptom of anemia, and also other symptoms like swelling of the abdominal region, pain in the bones and joints, vision problems, frequent infections, and delayed growth.
