Concept Introduction : The weather and life on Earth depends on the movement of moisture around the planet. The phase change of water is responsible for this movement. As water changes phases from liquid to solid, its density changes dramatically.

Solids are denser than liquids and gases. Gases are less dense than both solids and liquids.
Explanation of Solution
Gases are formed when solids sublime and liquids evaporate. When there is a change in phase from solid to gas the molecules spread far apart from each other. This increases the volume of the substance by about 1000 times. If volume increases, the density of the substance decreases substantially. Hence, solids are denser than liquids and gases. Gases expand to fill the container in which they are placed.
Thus, solids are denser than liquids and gases. Gases are less dense than both solids and liquids.
