Chapter U3.56, Problem 10E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Whether 15 g of dry ice is enough to completely fill a bag of volume 8L filled with carbon dioxide gas or not needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The density of a substance is related to its mass and volume as follows:

  d=mV

Here, m is mass and V is volume.

Answer to Problem 10E

Yes, person has enough dry ice to fill the bag.

Explanation of Solution

The volume of the bag filled with carbon dioxide is 8L. To fill the bag with dry ice, the volume of dry ice must be 8L. The dry ice is nothing but solid carbon dioxide and its density is 1.56 g/mL. The mass of dry ice required to fill the bag can be calculated as follows:

  m=d×V

Putting the values,

  m=(1.56 g/mL)(8 L)=12.48 g

The mass of dry ice person has is 15 g which is more than the required mass thus, he has enough dry ice to fill the bag.

Conclusion

The given mass of dry ice is 15 g and required mass is 12.48 g thus, enough mass of dry ice is present to fill the bag.
