The autonomic nervous system achieves its regulatory functions by releasing neurotransmitters from the axons of postganglianic fibers. Neurotransmitters can cause both positive as well as negative effects on the target cell. The effect of neurotransmitter depends on the nature of the receptor present in the target cell.
