Chapter 7, Problem 16P

In 1967, J. B. Jenkins treated wild-type male Drosophila with the mutagen ethylmethane sulfonate (EMS) and mated them with females homozygous for a recessive mutation called dumpy that causes shortened wings. He found some F progeny with two wild-type wings, some with two short wings, and some with one short wing and one wild-type wing. In a second cross, when he mated single F flies with two short wings to dumpy homozygotes, he found, surprisingly, that only a fraction of these matings produced all short-winged progeny.

a. Explain these results in light of the mechanism of action of EMS shown in Fig. 7.14.
b. Should the short-winged progeny of the second cross have one or two short wings? Why?

A Drosophila strain with two mutated phenotypes was crossed with a wild-type Drosophila strain. The wild-type phenotypes were present in all of the F1 flies. The F1 flies were bred with one another. The F2 generation, on the other hand, did not have the predicted 9:3:3:1 phenotypic ratio. Explain why these outcomes occurred.
Red eyes (r), brown color (b), and curled wings (c) are 3 recessive mutations that occur in house flies. These genes have already been mapped: r-b = 12 mu b-c = 18 mu r-c = 30 mu A fly with red eyes, brown color, and curled wings is crossed with a fly homozygous for the wild-type traits. The F1 males are crossed with females with the three mutant traits and 2000 progeny are produced. Find the number of observed double crossovers if the interference is 0.38. O 43 O 62 O 27 O 16
In Drosophila, a cross was made between females and wild-type males. The female parents expressed the three X-linked recessive traits miniature wing (m), ebony body (e) and cinnabar eye (c). In the F1, all females were wild type, while all males expressed all three mutant traits. The cross was carried to the F2 generation, and 1500 offspring were produced. 412 403 211 Miniature wing, ebony body, cinnabar eye Wild type Ebony body, cinnabar eye Miniature wing Miniature wing, cinnabar eye Ebony body Miniature wing, ebony body Cinnabar eye 224 103 96 23 28 (i) Using proper nomenclature, determine the genotypes of the females and males in generation P and F1.
