Chapter 6, Problem 17E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Each of the double bond needs to be labeled and whether it is E (trans), Z(cis) or none needs to be identified.

Concept introduction:

As per IUPAC rules, the naming of alkene is cis or trans based on arrangement of groups about the longest chain of carbon atoms. If the chain is not long and has only two carbon atoms about the double bond, the CIP rules are followed which allows the naming to have prefix of E or Z before the compound name based on the priority. This is applied when it is not possible to have naming as cis or trans.

1. Which of the following molecules should have the longest max based on the idea it has the most continuous conjugation? A B C OH D
Why is the bond-line drawing of the allylic cation shown below insufficient? O (+) The two electrons in the pi bond are delocalized into the adjacent p-orbital and are thus associated with three atom spread out over two locations. Neither of these attributes is depicted by this bond-line drawing. Carbon only has six electrons in its valence shell, and that is not allowed. Bond-line drawings need to have hydrogen atoms drawn in. There are four delocalized electrons spread over three atoms, which is not depicted by this bond-line drawing.
Rank in order of decreasing strength of the indicated bond. (1 = strongest bond; 4 = weakest bond) B D D
