Chapter 5, Problem 7RQ
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The protein that allows facilitated diffusion of water and also determines the experiment that demonstrated the function of this protein.

Introduction:

A cell membrane is made of different molecules like phospholipids, proteins, and cholesterol that contribute to the flexible nature of a cell membrane. A cell membrane is selectively permeable in nature which means it allows selective substances to enter the cell. The movement of molecules could be passive like in osmosis and diffusion, active transport or facilitated transport.

Active transport pumps are used to move sodium ions across the membranes of gill cells in freshwater fish species. Which of the following statements about the pumps is accurate?Explain.  a) There are specific binding sites for sodium ions on the pump b) They require osmosis to carry the sodium ions into the cell c) This is an example of passive diffusion and ATP is required d) Their lipid based structure allows it to embed in the cell membrane
Propose an experiment that would distinguish pore-mediated diffusion (e.g.,by gramicidin) from carrier-mediated diffusion (e.g., by valinomycin).
Briefly describe the experiment carried out to demonstrate that proteins are capable of lateral movement in cell membranes.
