Concept introduction:
Mixed Costs:
There are three types of costs according to the unit of production; Variable, Fixed and Mixed. Variable costs change proportionally with the number of units produced and variable cost per unit remains constant. Fixed Cost remains same in totality irrespective of the number of units produced.
The mixed cost is the mix of variable and fixed cost, some of its part is fixed and some variable.
High-Low Method:
This method is used to determine the fixed as well as variable part of the mixed cost. The formula for calculation of variable cost per unit is as follows:
The formula to calculate the Fixed Cost is as follows:
To calculate:
The Total expected operating cost for 96 units

- Ventana Window and Wall Treatments Company provides draperies, shades, and various window treatments. Ventana works with the customer to design the appropriate window treatment, places the order, and installs the finished product. Direct materials and direct labor costs are easy to trace to the jobs. Ventanas income statement for last year is as follows: Ventana wants to find a markup on cost of goods sold that will allow them to earn about the same amount of profit on each job as was earned last year. Required: 1. What is the markup on cost of goods sold (COGS) that will maintain the same profit as last year? (Round the percentage to two significant digits.) 2. A customer orders draperies and shades for a remodeling job. The job will have the following costs: What is the price that Ventana will quote given the markup percentage calculated in Requirement 1? (Round the price to the nearest dollar.) 3. What if Ventana wants to calculate a markup on direct materials cost, since it is the largest cost of doing business? What is the markup on direct materials cost that will maintain the same profit as last year? (Round the percentage to two significant digits.) What is the bid price Ventana will use for the job given in Requirement 2 if the markup percentage is calculated on the basis of direct materials cost? (Round to the nearest dollar.)arrow_forwardMethod of Least Squares Refer to the information for Luisa Crimini on the previous page. Required: 1. Using a computer spreadsheet program such as Excel, run a regression on these data. Based on the regression output, write the cost formula for tanning. (Note: Round the fixed cost to the nearest dollar and the variable rate to the nearest cent.) 2. Using the formula computed in Requirement 1, what is the predicted cost of tanning services for September for 2,500 appointments? Use the following information for Exercises 3-44 through 3-46: Luisa Crimini has been operating a beauty shop in a college town for the past 10 years. Recently, Luisa rented space next to her shop and opened a tanning salon. She anticipated that the costs for the tanning service would primarily be fixed, but found that tanning salon costs increased with the number of appointments. Costs for this service over the past 8 months are as follows:arrow_forwardKeleher Industries manufactures pet doors and sells them directly to the consumer via their web site. The marketing manager believes that if the company invests in new software, they will increase their sales by 10%. The new software will increase fixed costs by $400 per month. Prepare a forecasted contribution margin income statement for Keleher Industries reflecting the new software cost and associated increase in sales. - The controller of Emery, Inc. has computed quality costs as a percentage of sales for the past 5 years (20X1 was the first year the company implemented a quality improvement program). This information is as follows: Required: 1. Prepare a trend graph for total quality costs. Comment on what the graph has to say about the success of the quality improvement program. 2. Prepare a graph that shows the trend for each quality cost category. What does the graph have to say about the success of the quality improvement program? Does this graph supply more insight than the total cost trend graph does? 3. Prepare a graph that compares the trend in relative control costs versus relative failure costs. Comment on the significance of this trend.arrow_forwardBumblebee Mobiles manufactures a line of cell phones. The management has identified the following overhead costs and related cost drivers for the coming year. The following were incurred in manufacturing two of their cell phones, Bubble and Burst, during the first quarter. REQUIREMENT Review the worksheet called ABC that follows these requirements. You have been asked to determine the cost of each product using an activity-based cost system. Note that the problem information is already entered into the Data Section of the ABC worksheet.arrow_forwardDeMarco Company is developing a cost formula for its packing activity. Discussion with the workers in the Packing Department has revealed that packing costs are associated with the number of customer orders, the size of the orders, and the relative fragility of the items (more fragile items must be specially wrapped in bubble wrap and Styrofoam). Data for the past 20 months have been gathered: Required: 1. Using the method of least squares, run a regression using the number of orders as the independent variable. 2. Run a multiple regression using three independent variables: the number of orders, the weight of orders, and the number of fragile items. Which regression equation is better? Why? 3. Predict the total packing cost for 25,000 orders, weighing 40,000 pounds, with 4,000 fragile items.arrow_forward
- Jean and Tom Perritz own and manage Happy Home Helpers, Inc. (HHH), a house-cleaning service. Each cleaning (cleaning one house one time) takes a team of three house cleaners about 1.5 hours. On average, HHH completes about 15,000 cleanings per year. The following total costs are associated with the total cleanings: Required: 1. Calculate the prime cost per cleaning. 2. Calculate the conversion cost per cleaning. 3. Calculate the total variable cost per cleaning. 4. Calculate the total service cost per cleaning. 5. What if rent on the office that Jean and Tom use to run HHH increased by 1,500? Explain the impact on the following: a. Prime cost per cleaning b. Conversion cost per cleaning c. Total variable cost per cleaning d. Total service cost per cleaningarrow_forwardThe president of a small manufacturing firm is concerned about the continual increase in manufacturing costs over the past several years. The following figures provide a time series of the cost per unit for the firms leading product over the past eight years: a. Construct a time series plot. What type of pattern exists in the data? b. Use simple linear regression analysis to find the parameters for the line that minimizes MSE for this time series. c. What is the average cost increase that the firm has been realizing per year? d. Compute an estimate of the cost/unit for next year.arrow_forwardNorris Company implemented a quality improvement program and tracked the following for the 5 years: By cost category of sales for the same period of time: Required: 1. Prepare a bar graph (hat reveals the trend in quality cost as a percentage of sales (time on horizontal axis and percentages on the vertical). Comment on the message of the graph. 2. Prepare a bar graph for each cost category as a percentage of sales. What does this graph tell you?arrow_forward

It presents the monthly operating income statement shown here to George Lupe, a potential investor in the business. Help Mr. Lupe understand Mirabella Beauty's cost structure. Mirabella Beauty Operating Income Statement, June 2020 Units sold $10,000 Revenues $200,000 Cost of goods sold Variable manufacturing costs $70,000 Fixed manufacturing costs $32,900 Total 102,900 Gross margin 97,100 Operating costs Variable marketing costs $58,000 Fixed marketing and administrative costs 17,500 Total operating costs 75,500 Operating income $21,600 Recast the income statement to emphasize contribution margin. Calculate the contribution margin percentage and breakeven point in units and revenues for June2020. What is the margin of safety (in units) for June 2020? If sales in June were only 8,500 units and Mirabella's tax rate is 30%, calculate its net income.arrow_forwardHorton Manufacturing Incorporated produces blinds and other window treatments for residential homes and offices.
