Chapter 41.3, Problem 1CT
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The advantages and disadvantages of having a child homozygous for the allele encoding for fast-twitch fibers.
Introduction:
The Long muscles generally contain the fast-twitch muscle fibers. There is a low requirement of the oxygen in fast-twitch muscle fibers. The mitochondria are fewer in the fast-twitch muscle fibers. The fast-twitch muscle fibers are white in color because there the level of myoglobin is low in these fibers.

Men are generally stronger than women because they typically have larger bodies, and a more significant proportion of their total body mass is made up of muscle. However, when strength is expressed per unit of the cross-sectional area of muscle tissue, men are only 1-2% stronger than women in the upper body and equal to women in the lower body. Explain two factors that explain these disparities.
Do a little bit of reserach on each Muscular Dystrophy (MD) subtype and gather your results in the table below. To answer questions 2 and 3, use this table (attached) as a guide.

Questions to consider: How do they differ in their progression?Do they have an impact on various muscle groups or the same ones? - A study of muscle fibers between chimpanzees and humans revealed that although muscle mass per body size are approximately equivalent, the ratio of red (slow) and white (fast) fibers were significantly different. Chimps tend to have a ratio of 30% red to 70% white where humans are 60/40 respectively. Speculate about what this ratio difference means in terms of muscle activity potential and a possible evolutionary significance of this difference.arrow_forwardPluripotent stem cells undergo a number of changes as they progress through developmental stages to become the terminally differentiated cell type known as a skeletal muscle myofiber. a) Describe the stages and key anatomic and functional changes that occur during differentiation of myofibers. b) Despite the fact that myofibers are terminally differentiated, muscle can regenerate itself following a trauma or injury. This drug acts on specific skeletal muscles to (1) block the release of Ca2+ ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, (2) inhibit the pivoting ability of the myosin heads of the thick filaments, and (3) block the production of ATP by the mitochondria in skeletal muscles. By using this drug, contraction of certain skeletal muscle fibers is reduced, which keeps those muscles from producing spasms. - What happens to contraction of a muscle cell if some of the Ca2+ that was released during a contraction is still in the cytoplasm (sarcoplasm) when the next stimulus arrives? - The muscle contracts with the same tension generated as during the first contraction, because the number of cross-bridges formed is always the same during a contraction. - The muscle contracts with greater tension generated because more troponin molecules bound means greater myosin-binding sites (active sites) are revealed on the actin, leading to a larger number of cross-bridges formed. - The muscle contracts with greater tension generated because there will be more Ca2+ in the sarcoplasm after the second stimulation, which will bind to more troponin molecules. - The muscle contracts with the same tension generated as during the first contraction, because muscles contract in an all-or-none fashion.arrow_forwardCaffeine is the go-to supplement for many athletes.
