Chapter 35, Problem 36A
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Whether the male or the female needs more calories comparatively.

Introduction:

The calories are described as the amount of energy an individual needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water through 1 degree Celsius. It depends on the type of food a person eats to determine the number of calories consumes. The weight of the people will determine the number of calories one should consume or not. The body energy that one is used depends on how much active the person will be, next, it depends on the efficiency of the body to use the energy, and it also depends on the age of the person.

Explanation of Solution

Around 20 percent of the energy that a person consumes is used in the metabolism process of the brain. Most of the remainders are used in basal metabolism, the resources a person used in the blood circulation, digestion, respiration process while he or she is a resting state. Depending on the age the number of calories one should consume is different, with the increase in the age the calories in the food should decrease. A person of age 25-30 should consume about 2,400 calories a day; the age up to 60 should consume 2,000 calories, while the person of age 19-25 should take 2,600 calories per day. A person of age 19-30 needs the highest number of calories as they are physically active and use more energy compare to the person in fifties or sixties. In the case of kids, from ages 6-12 they should consume 1600 to 2,200 calories per day, while for toddlers of age 2 years should have 1000-1400 calories per day. The amount of calories a person should consume also depends on gender. According to the graph, male needs more calories compare to females, they also need more total intake of macronutrients. A woman needs lesser calories instead they should consume more vitamins and minerals. A male needs 2500 calories a day while a female needs 2000 calories in a day.

Conclusion

Thus, it is concluded that men need more calories to compare to women. A woman needs more vitamins and minerals than calories.
