Chapter 34, Problem 4A
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

As the heart beats, it pumps blood via a system of blood vessels, known as the circulatory system. The vessels are elastic, muscular tubes that transport blood to each part of the body. Blood is essential. In addition to transporting fresh oxygen from the lungs and nutrients to our body's tissues, it additionally takes the body's waste products, including carbon dioxide, away from the tissues. This is important to maintain life and promote the health of all the body's tissues. There are three important kinds of blood vessels, they are- arteries, capillaries, veins.

Answer to Problem 4A

Correct answer:

The correct answer is option A. the aorta.

Explanation of Solution

Explanation/justification for the correct answer:

Option A. the aorta. Blood leaves the heart via the pulmonic valve, into the pulmonary artery and to the lungs. Blood leaves the heart via the aortic valve, into the aorta and to the body. This pattern is repeated, inflicting blood to flow constantly to the heart, lungs and body. So, the correct answer is option A.

Explanation for incorrect answer:

Option B. the capillaries. From our pulmonic valve, blood travels to the pulmonary artery to tiny capillary vessels in the lungs. Here, oxygen travels from the tiny air sacs with inside the lungs, through the walls of the capillaries, into the blood. So, this is an incorrect answer.

Option C. the lungs. Once blood travels via the pulmonic valve, it enters your lungs. This is known as the pulmonary circulation. So, this is an incorrect answer.

Option D. the pulmonary veins. Once the blood is purified and oxygenated, it travels lower back to the left atrium via the pulmonary veins. So, this is an incorrect answer.
