Chapter 34, Problem 1A
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The name of the vessel which carries oxygen-rich blood.

Introduction:

Blood vessel is a vessel with inside the human or animal body in which blood circulates. The vessels that carry blood far away from the heart are known as arteries, and their very small branches are arterioles. Very small branches that accumulate the blood from the many organs and components are known as venules, and they unite to form veins, which carry back the blood to the heart. Capillaries are minute thin-walled vessels that connect the arterioles and venules; it is through the capillaries that nutrients or minerals and wastes are exchanged among the blood and body tissues. There are three varieties of blood vessels. They are- arteries, veins, and capillaries.

Explanation of Solution

The arteries are the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues of the body. Each artery is a muscular tube covered by smooth tissue and has three layers, they are- intima (it is the internal layer covered by a smooth tissue known as endothelium), media (it is a layer of muscle that lets arteries handle the excessive pressures from the heart), adventitia (it is a connective tissue anchoring arteries to nearby tissues).

Conclusion

Thus, an artery carries blood far away from the heart and closer to other tissues and organs. Arteries are a part of the circulatory system which delivers oxygen and nutrients to each cell with inside the body.
