Concept explainers
To distinguish: between cochlea and semicircular canals.
Introduction: Ear helps us to hear things. The primary function performed by the ear is to hear and balance. The receptors in the ear can detect both high and low volumes. Canals of the ear help in maintaining balance.
Explanation of Solution
The cochlea is an auditory inner ear. Its structure is that of a snail and is present in the inner ear that converts sound into neural input. The cochlea's purpose is to change the cochlear fluid and similar structures into a neural signal. The cochlea is filled with tiny hair cells and fluid.
Three thin fluid-filled tubes present in our inner ear are semi-circular canals. It helps in maintaining balance. When the head turns around, the fluid flows about inside the semicircular canals and pushes the tiny hairs in each canal. It transfers information about body posture and balance to the brain.
Thus, this is the difference between cochlea and semicircular canals.
