Chapter 33, Problem 13STP
Summary Introduction

To write:

About the gametophyte role in generation of seed plants.

Introduction:

The plants have an alteration of generation between the diploid sporophyte and haploid gametophyte. The plant forms zygote from the diploid sporophytic generation and undergoes meiosis cell division to produce haploid spores, then through mitotic cell division, they form multicellular gametophyte. The kingdom plants are divided into four classes that include Pteridophyta, Bryophyta, gymnosperm, and angiosperm. The gymnosperm and angiosperm both are seed-producing plants.

Explanation of Solution

In seed-producing plants like gymnosperm and angiosperm, the gametophyte generation takes place in the flowering or cone forming stage that develops the mature sporophyte plant. The male gametophyte consists of few cells in the pollen grain and the female gametophyte produces egg in the ovule. The pollen grains are the male gametophytes and for four diploid cells and form microspore which when falling into the female reproductive organs that contain megaspore, both get fused and fertilized to form the new plant.

Conclusion

Thus, the gametophyte role in generation is to develop the sex organs for the production of gametes the haploid cells involve in the fertilization to form a diploid zygote.
