Rocky’s Pre-Cast Shop is considering two different processes for completing Pre-Cast jobs. Process A uses one person to setup the job and do the pre-casting. If this approach is used, an experienced person can complete an average of 20 jobs per day. Process B uses two people. One person does the setup and the second person does the actual pre-casting. Setup on one job can be done while pre-casting is being completed on another but pre-casting must be completed on a job before the pre-cast machine can start processing the next. After some practice, this second process can be completed with a standard time of 10 minutes for setup and 15 minutes for actual pre-casting. In either case, assume an 8-hour day, 5 days per week, 250 days per year.
3.
Assuming ideal conditions, what is the maximum capacity of process B?
4.
How long would it take to process 200 jobs using process A (assume only one worker and one machine)?

Smartphones are made on a 40-step assembly process. All 40 steps are connectedthrough a conveyor belt and all of the 40 steps must work at the same rate even if someof them have more capacity than others. Is this process a machine-paced process or aworker-paced process?a. Machine-pacedb. Worker-paced
A process of making chair is described as follows: Stage 1 Seat and back attached Stage 2 Legs attached The production speeds are 15 chairs per hour for Stage 1 and 30 chairs per hour for stage 2. The cycle time of the process is ______minutes. The flow time of the process is ______ minutes.

- Consider the example of the three-step process. The first step takes 20 minutes/unit, the second step takes 10 minutes/unit, and the third step takes 15 minutes/unit. Eachstep is staffed by one worker. What is the labor content of the process?arrow_forwardA startup company is considering making a part by injection molding. The part is moderately complex and the volume of the part is about 10 cubic centimeters. Assume that the part is designed for injection molding and can be made with a two part mold. The company needs to make 250,000 parts made from ABS plastic. Once the mold is made it will take a worker 1 minute to make one part using the injection molding machine. The company will use contract manufacturing to produce the parts. Estimate the cost per part and explain how you came up with the number. (If you are stuck look at the Contract Manufacturing Cost per Unit section. Also keep in mind that there is no exact right answer, the goal is to come up with a reasonable estimate.) Contract Manufacturing Cost per Unit: It’s not uncommon to hire another company to perform some or all the manufacturing for a product. To estimate the cost use ((Cost of Parts and Materials) + (man hours) × $40)/.75arrow_forwardThis is a step in a process that is the slowest compared tothe other steps. - Clinical supervision is a management practice that benefits from parallel processing. This helps students learn and succeed. If two tasks cannot be completed simultaneously, then the time spent waiting for the delayed task to begin might be used toward finishing the first task. The individual's productivity is increased and time is better controlled thanks to parallel processing.arrow_forwardConsider the following batch-flow process consisting of three process stepsperformed by three machines. Process steps step 1 step 2 step 3 processing time 0.25min./unit 0.20 min./unit 0.15 min./unit setup time 30 min 20 min 45 min Work is processed in batches at each step. Before a batch is processed at a step, the machine atthat step must be set up. (During a setup, the machine is unable to process any product.) Assumethat there is a dedicated setup operator for each machine (i.e., there is always someone availableto perform a setup at each machine.)a. What is the capacity of step 1 if the batch size is 35 parts?b. For what batch sizes is step 1 (2, 3) the bottleneck?arrow_forwardRecently, some operations management experts have begun insisting that simply maximizing process velocity, which actually means minimizing the time it takes to process something through the system, is the single most important measure for improving a process. Can you think of a situation in which this might not be true?arrow_forward

There is one machine at each step of the process, and this is a machine-paced process. Step 1: 15 minutes per unit Step 2: 23 minutes per unit Step 3: 23 minutes per unit Step 4: 27 minutes per unit Assuming that the process starts out empty, how long will it take (in hours) to complete a batch of 123 units? - ene is working with the operations manager to determine what the standard labor cost is for a spice chest. He has watched the process from start to finish and taken detailed notes on what each employee does. The first employee selects and mills the wood, so it is smooth on all four sides. This takes the employee 1 hour(s) for each chest. The next employee takes the wood and cuts it to the proper size. This takes 43 minutes. The next employee assembles and sands the chest. Assembly takes 3 hour(s). The chest then goes to the finishing department. It takes 3 hour(s) to finish the chest. All employees are cross-trained so they are all paid the same amount per hour, $17.62. What is the standard cost per chest for labor?
