Chapter 3, Problem 7CR
Summary Introduction

To review:

The fate of the cell in a low salt or high salt environment.

Introduction:

The maintenance of the volume of a cell is important for various reasons. Cells try to regulate their cell volume by various mechanisms such as the sodium-potassium (Na+/K+) pump. The volume of the cell also depends on the concentration of the fluid surrounding it. In other words, it depends on the tonicity or the relative concentration of solutes such as sodium (Na+) ions in two different fluids (inside the cell and outside the cell).

You have two types of cells (animal cells and plant cells) that you will place in a variety of conditions. Please describe what would happen to each of those two cells in the following solutions, i) isotonic solution; ii) hypertonic solution; iii) hypotonic solution.
If a scientist drops an animal cell into a solution that contains 10 times more salt than is found inside the cell, which of the following will happen? Hint: drawing a picture may help you. A) The cell will burst since the solution is hypertonic B) The cell will shrink since the solution is hypotonic. C) The cell will burst since the solution is hypotonic. D) The cell will shrink since the solution is hypertonic. E) The cell will not change in size since the solution is isotonic.
What diseases and disorders will affect the regulations of liquid liquid phase separation in cells and what diseases and disorders will be caused if the regulations of liquid liquid phase separation is disrupted?
