Chapter 3, Problem 34P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Meaning of the terms (a) chiral, (b) enantiomer and (c) helical chain is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

If two species have the same molecular formula and same atom connectivity, but differ in the spatial arrangement of different atoms or groups about a central atom or a double bond, then the compounds are stereoisomers.

Chiral molecules can rotate plane of plane-polarized light and this property is known as optical activity and the two mirror images are known as optical isomers.

Optical isomers are also known as enantiomers.

Chiral molecules with one or more stereo-centre can be enantiomers.

Blurred answer
Students have asked these similar questions
(a) how many stereoisomers are possible? (b) how many chiral carbons are in the structure? (c) is this optically active?
Determine (A.) functional groups presents in the molecules and (B) determine the number of chiral carbons in the molecule (Exclude alkane) NH2 HO (Hint: Only six functional groups available)
