Chapter 3, Problem 43P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

When O2 binds to the Fe centre, it does so in an ‘end-on’ manner and give rise to a band in the IR spectrum at 1107 cm-1, no absorption is present in the IR spectrum of gaseous O2, these observations are to be rationalized.

Concept Introduction:

Haemoglobin is iron containing metalloprotein responsible for transporting O2 in the bloodstream of mammals and is stored in the tissues in myoglobin.

Both haemoglobin and myoglobin are haem-iron proteins.

(b) The molybdenum-carbon bond lengths of Mo(15-Cp)(CO)3(CH3), F, were determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. They are: Mo-CO = 1.99 Å and Mo-CH3 = 2.33 Å. Rationalise this difference in bond length. Sketch relevant molecular orbitals.
Explain the following terms with one example each :(a) Ferrimagnetism                                 (b) Antiferromagnetism(c) 13-15 compounds
(a) Write the electronic configuration of Ce3+ ion, and calculate the magnetic moment on the basis of ‘spin-only’ formula. [Atomic No. of Ce = 58] (b) Account for the following: (i) Thf enthalpies of atomisation of the transition metals are high. (ii) The lowest oxide of a transition metal is basic, the highest is amphoteric/ acidic. (iii) Cobalt (II) is stable in aqueous solution but in the presence of complexing agents, it is easily oxidised.
