Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The elements of unsaturation in the given molecule and the molecular formula should be determined.
Concept introduction:
The element of unsaturation is also said to be degree of unsaturation. It can be defined as the degree or extent of unsaturation in the form of ring or multiple bonds (double or triple bond). The formula for elements of unsaturation is:
- (1)
Here:
DoU = Elements of unsaturation or degree of unsaturation
C = number of carbon atom in the given molecular formula
N = number of nitrogen atom in the given molecular formula
X = number of halogen atom in the given molecular formula
H = number of hydrogena atom in the given molecular formula

To consider the importance of the bonding pattern in some hydrocarbons, make a table of the following compounds and their octane number: pentane, hexane, heptane, 2-methylpentane, 2-methylhexane, 3,3-dimethylpentane, cyclohexane,, benzene and methylbenzene (toluene) Pentane Hexane Нeptane 2-methylpentane 2-methylhexane, 3,3-dimethylpentane, cyclohexane benzene methylbenzene (toluene)arrow_forwardIt is easy to imagine a cyclohexane as a flat hexagon and a lot of the time we draw it that way. Looking at 1,3,5-triethylcyclohexane we cannot tell the stability of the molecule from looking at the flat 2D drawing.
