Anaerobic microbes do not require oxygen to grow. In the presence of oxygen, they can react negatively or can die. There are three types of anaerobic organisms. Facultative anaerobes can grow in the presence or absence of oxygen, aerotolerant anaerobes do not require oxygen to grow, and strict anaerobes never utilize oxygen for growth and metabolism.
