Chapter 19, Problem 1TQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The approaches that can be used to the discover unknown deeply branching groups of archaea and the strengths and limitations of the same.
Introduction:
Archaea is the third major domain of life. Initially, it was found only in extreme habitats but later it was isolated from the normal habitats such as soils and oceans. The archaea are majorly divided into three phyla, namely Crenarchaeota, Thaumarchaeota, and Euryarchaeota. It is difficult to study the archaeal genomics as most of them are difficult to culture.

Give the most currently used methods in the identification and classification of archaea.
What are the promises and future uses of research in archaea?
If you visit a lake in the middle of the Amazon and take water samples to analyze under a microscope from a nearby university that has good instrumentation and there you detect microorganisms that are not visible to the naked eye. What studies would you do to determine if they are bacteria, archaea, fungi or protozoa? Explain each type of analysis and how would you rule out members of each group?
