Question
Chapter 18, Problem 34RA
Summary Introduction
To review:
The following:
1. The role of ECL cells as a final common pathway for the neural, endocrine, and paracrine regulation of gastric acid secretion.
2. The effectiveness of drug intervention in order to block the excessive acid secretion.
Introduction:
Enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells release histamine which causes the production of gastric HCl (hydrochloric acid). Enterochromaffin cells are the neuroendocrine cells that are present in the gastric gland beneath the epithelium of the gastric mucosa and produce gastric acid by the release of histamine.
