Recombinant DNA is a DNA that contains genes or parts of genes from two or more organisms, usually of different species. It can be produced in bacteria, viruses, or yeast and then transferred into other species. Biotechnology can be used to identify, isolate, modify genes, and combine genes from different organisms. Organisms that contain recombinant DNA or modified DNA derived from other species through genetic engineering are called transgenic or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
