Concept explainers
To Compare:The pulses travelling in different mediums:coiled spring toy, rope and a metal rod.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A pulse is a singledisturbance through any medium and even vacuum. The speed of the pulse depends on the medium though which travels and is independent of the length and even the amplitude of the pulse.
The density of the medium and elasticity properties determines the speed of the pulse in the medium. The pulse does not reach the other end instantaneously. It takes little time for the pulse to reach the other end in each case.
The pulse reaches fastest to the other end in a metal rod, then in rope and then slowest in the spring.
