Concept explainers
The manner in which the transverse wave transports energy without transferring matter.
Answer to Problem 26SSC
Waves can transfer energy over distance without moving matter through entire distance. Transverse waves are determined by moving a rope rapidly up and down.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A moving wave that is made up of oscillations which is perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer is called as a transverse wave.
The transverse wave can also be determined that it is a wave that makes the medium to vibrate at right angles which is perpendicular to the direction in which they are travelling parallel to each other.
Transverse wave is a wave in which the medium vibrates at direction perpendicular to the direction of its propagation.
Tie a piece of yarn somewhere in middle of the rope. With a partner holding one end of the rope, shake the other end up and down to create a transverse wave.
While the wave moves down the rope, the yarn moves up and down but remains in the same place on the rope.
Conclusion:
Hence, the matter is not transferred along a transverse wave while transporting energy.
