Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The light shining on a matter needs to be described.
Concept introduction:
Light is an
It have both wave and particle nature. Light always carries packets of energy that is known as photons. There are seven properties of light by which it is visible to human eye. These properties are: reflection of light, refraction of light, diffraction, interference, polarization, dispersion and scattering of light.
Explanation of Solution
Transmission of light takes place when light passes through the matter. When light is transmitted, it passes straight through the matter or refracted or scattered by matter. Absorption of light happens when light transfers all its energy to matter not being reflected or transmitted by matter. Other properties are:
Reflection:
- When visible light falls on a matter it behaves differently.
- On falling on a transparent object, light gets transmitted to the other side. A white surface always reflects all the light.
- When light falls on opaque objects, all part of the light is absorbed. Also, most of the light is absorbed by a black surface.
- When light falls on smooth surface it bounce back the light. It is called reflection of light.
Dispersion:
- Visible light contains seven components.
- The splitting of the visible light takes place into its components color. It is called as dispersion of light, which is explained by the rainbow.
- A white light is compost of 7 colors namely violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
Shining of object or matter:
- When all components of light are reflected into human eyes the objects appears white and when all color components are absorbed by the object it appears black.
- Matter can be classified as transparent, translucent, or opaque depending upon the interaction with light.
