Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The approximate size of mol of a gas, 1 mol of a solid, and 1 mol of a liquid should be predicted.
Concept Introduction:
The amount of the substance that contains the same number of particles or atoms or molecules is termed as mole.
Explanation of Solution
Anything that occupies space is termed as matter. Matter is classified as
Due to this reason, a mole of a molecule is equal to 6 times a sextillion molecule which constitute very less space in case of liquids and solids.
For example, sodium chloride which is used as a table salt in daily life has a molar mass of 58.45 g that means 1 mole of NaCl is approximately equal to 1/4th cup which is full of salt.
The situation for gases is quite different. As one mole of an ideal gas constitutes 22.4 L volume at standard temperature and pressure. That means gases occupies large volume as compared to the solids and liquids due to weak intermolecular forces of attraction in between them they can spread widely.
For example, 1 mol of carbon dioxide gas occupies 22.4 L volume which is equal to volume of the bucket used for the bathing.
