Concept explainers
Interpretation:
General properties of acids and bases must be explained.
Concept introduction:
Many concepts are there to define acids and bases. Arrhenius concept states that H+ donors are acids and OH- donors are bases.
Lewis concept states that electron donors are bases and electron acceptors are acids.
Acids are sour in taste and bases are bitter.
Acids solutions can convert blue litmus to red. Base solutions convert red litmus to blue.
Most of the acids and bases can produce hydrogen gas after reacting with highly electropositive metals. Acids solutions can give effervescence after reacting with sodium bicarbonate.
Some of the bases like potassium hydroxide can corrode glass. Base solutions are slippery in nature.
On the pH scale, the solutions having pH less than 7 are acidic in nature and solution with pH greater than 7 are basic in nature.
The solutions with pH equal to 7 are neutral.
