A hypothetical nuclear reaction must be written for the fusion of copper with another nucleus to make gold. Whether it is possible or not must also be explained.

Answer to Problem SIII4RQ

The hypothetical reaction for the fusion of copper and other nuclei to form gold is as follows:

  ${}_{29}{\text{Cu}}^{63}{+}_{50}{\text{X}}^{134}{\to }_{79}{\text{Au}}^{197}$

Here, X element has atomic number 50 which indicates tin (Sn) but the mass number is not correct for the naturally occurring isotope of Sn thus, this reaction is not possible.

Explanation of Solution

The copper nucleus is undergoing nuclear fusion with a tin nucleus to produce a nucleus of gold.

This is not possible as there is no existence of ₅₀Sn¹³⁴ isotope of tin. It is very unstable with a neutron to proton ratio of 1.68. Also, ₂₉Cu⁶³ is a very stable isotope and that’s why it does not undergo nuclear fusion reaction.

Conclusion

The hypothetical reaction of copper and the tin nucleus to produce a gold nucleus is not possible.
