Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The term matter should be explained.
Concept introduction:
Anything that has mass, volume and occupies space is known as matter. There are three
Explanation of Solution
The three states of matter are:
Solid: The intermolecular forces are very strong in this state of matter due to which the particles (atoms, ions, or molecules) are closely-packed and cannot move randomly. Thus, solids are incompressible, rigid and has high mechanical strength and has definite shape and volume.
Liquid: The intermolecular forces are strong but less than in solids in this state of matter due to which the particles (atoms, ions, or molecules) are loosely connected and can move past each other. Thus, liquids have definite volume and incompressible and but not definite shape (take the shape of container).
Gas: The intermolecular forces are very weak in this state of matter due to which the particles (atoms, ions, or molecules) are widely separated and remain in rapid motions. Thus, gases are compressible and has no definite volume and shape.
