A study was performed looking at the effect of physical activity on cognitive function among adults at high risk for Alzheimer's disease. There were 170 eligible subjects randomly assigned to either an exercise intervention (exercise group) or a control intervention (control group). The subjects were followed at 6-month intervals up to
18 months of follow-up. The primary assessment scale was the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog). The results at 18 months of follow-up among participants with mild cognitive impairment are given in the table below. (Let population 1 be the exercise group and population 2 be the control group.
Use exercise group control group.)

Callahan (2009) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of physical exercise programs for individuals with chronic arthritis. Participants with doctor-diagnosed arthritis either received a Tai Chi course immediately or were placed in a control group to begin the course 8 weeks later. At the end of the 8-week period, self-reports of pain were obtained for both groups. Data similar to the results obtained in the study are shown in the following table.
Self-Reported Level of Pain Mean

Social functioning is the ability for an individual to interact or adapt in a normal or usual way in social environments. Albert et al. (2007) asked if relatives of patients with OCD are as healthy as those in general healthy populations. They measured the social functioning of relatives using a 36-item survey with scores ranging from 0 (worst possible health) to 100 (best possible health). The mean score for the general healthy population was 77.43. Using the sample data, test whether there was a difference.

- A clinician was interested in exploring functionality in patients following a stroke rehabilitation program. Participants were recruited through the rehabilitation unit at Providence Care Hospital. Functional status was evaluated at baseline (immediately following stroke), and 8 weeks later. Patients’ functional outcomes were rated on the following 5-point scale: 1 – poor, 2- fair, 3 – moderate, 4 -good, 5 – excellent. The clinician wants to know whether patients improved their functioning over the 8-week period. 1.
