Chapter 7, Problem 33P
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Analyze the effect on DNA replication if mutation of DNA pol III loses each of the following activities,

  1. 5'3' polymerase activity.

  2. 3'5' exonuclease activity.

Introduction:

DNA replication is one of the basic and important processes that occurs within the cell in which a double stranded DNA molecule is copied to produce two identical DNA molecules. In prokaryotes, the replication of DNA is bidirectional, which is, processing from a single point of origin of replication to both directions, and the series of proteins and enzymes are involved in the replication mechanism.

One of the important enzymes in the DNA replication mechanism is DNA polymerase III. The main replicative enzyme is DNA polymerase III. It synthesizes a new DNA strand in 5'3' direction.

Blurred answer
Students have asked these similar questions
what if a mutation resulted in the enzyme DNA polymerase III being non-functional? How would that affect DNA replication
During DNA replication, the two new daughter DNA strands have to be made at the same time in the same direction by DNA polymerase III. How is this accomplished?
Match the enzymes provided from (1-4) in the list of choices with their matching function (A-D) during DNA replication. A. Disrupts hydrogen bonds between DNA bases B. Can only add nucleotides to an existing 3 OH end C. Can't add nucleotides to a chain, but can make covalent bonds D. Actually a specialized form of RNA polymerase select 1. DNA polymerase select 2. Primase select 3. Ligase select v 4. Helicase
