Concept explainers
To write:
If there were no buffers in human cells what might happen.
Introduction:
The buffer systems performing in blood plasma include plasma proteins, phosphate, and bicarbonate and carbonic acid buffers. The kidneys help to maintain acid-base balance by excreting hydrogen ions and producing bicarbonate that helps to maintain blood plasma pH within a normal range.
Explanation of Solution
A buffer system is a system that maintains pH constant. This is very important in our cells because all of our enzymes require a particular pH value to function at optimum. If the pH changes, our enzymes might denature or die.
So, a buffering system helps to maintain the pH of the blood and other fluids within a narrow range between pH 7.35 and 7.45 in our body.
