Chapter 6, Problem 36A
Summary Introduction

To write:

Two places in the body where buffers are used to limit sharp changes in pH.

Introduction:

The amount of hydrogen ions in a solution determines the strength of an acid or base. The measure of concentration of H+ in a solution is called pH. Pure water in neutral and has a pH value of 7. Buffers are mixtures that can react with acids or bases to keep the pH within a particular range.

Explanation of Solution

The majority of biological processes carried out by cell occur between pH 6.5 and 7.5. In order to maintain homeostasis, it is very important to control the H+ levels. If we have ever had an upset stomach, we might have taken an antacid to feel better. The antacid tablet is a buffer which helps the stomach acid to neutralize. In cells, buffers keep the pH in a cell between the pH ranges of 6.5 to 7.5. The two places in a body where buffers are used to limit sharp changes in pH are cells and blood. Our blood contains buffers that keep the pH about 7.4.

Conclusion

Thus, the blood and human cells are the two places where buffers used to limit sharp changes in pH.
