Chapter 57, Problem 2Q
Summary Introduction

To review:

The effect, which the sea cucumbers have on the amount of total organic carbon (TOC) contained in sediments in the experimental tanks and how it relates to nutrient cycling.

Given:

The TOC (percentage of sediment dry weight) for an experiment for weeks (1–8 weeks) was measured for control tanks and sea cucumber grazed tanks and plotted against as a graph.

Introduction:

Nutrient cycling refers to the cycling of nutrients through biogeochemical cycles. It involves both biological and chemical changes. There are many different types of nutrient cycles that operate in nature. Carbon is an organic compound which is present in living organisms. The death and decomposition of organic matter as well as processes such as respiration leads to release of carbon into the atmosphere. Huge amounts of carbon are stored in marine sediments.
