To determine:
The six general type of nutrients.
Introduction:
A nutrient is the substance used by an organism for its survival, growth and reproduction. The six essential nutrients includes: carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins minerals, and water.
To determine:
The two nutrients that provide the most energy for humans.
Introduction:
Lipids and carbohydrates are the two most important energy sources. Carbohydrates are the important energy source for the brain. Lipids are an important energy source that when consumed, increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins including vitamin A and K.
To determine:
The nutrient that store the most energy in humans.
Introduction:
Lipids perform major biological functions like storing energy, signaling and acting as structural components of cell membranes.

- Which of the following statements is not true? a. Essential nutrients can be synthesized by the body. b. Vitamins are required in small quantities for bodily function. c. Some amino acids can be synthesized by the body, while others need to be obtained from diet. d. Vitamins come in two categories: fat-soluble and water-soluble.arrow_forwarddescribe the functions of each nutrient. Explain the basic needs of the human body for these three nutrients and sources of each. Carbohydrates Proteins Lipidsarrow_forwardAll of the following are correct about the term "essential nutrient" except: 1) there are about 40 nutrients known to be essential. 2) these nutrients must be obtained from food. 3) water is a nonessential nutrient. 4) carbohydrates are nonessential.arrow_forward
- List the six classes of nutrients, explaining the significance of each.arrow_forwardIf vitamins are neither biochemically similar compounds nor sources of energy, what characteristics distinguish vitamins as a distinct group of nutrients? What are the water-soluble and the fat-soluble vitamins?arrow_forwarda) What are the advantages of storing food as fat rather than carb or protein? b) What is the formal definition of an “essential nutrient” in one’s diet? c) How can you eat whole foods as a “vegan” (which many animals do!) and get all the essential amino acids without eating anything related to animals and not by taking supplements/pills d) What is the difference between a vitamin and a mineral?arrow_forward
- Identify the 6 classes of essential nutrients required by the body. (2) For each of the 3 essential nutrients that provide calories/energy (macronutrients) explain what they provide for our body and provide a food source for each.arrow_forwardWhich of the following represents the most concentrated source of calories?arrow_forwardWhich of the following nutrients provide 4 calories per gram? 1) Carbohydrate and fat 2) Fat and protein 3) Carbohydrate and protein 4) Alcohol and proteinarrow_forward
- Why is it important for the diet to provide enough carbohydrates in order for the body to be able to make optimal use of dietary protein? Why might a high-protein diet not be the healthiest option for weight loss and weight loss maintenance?arrow_forwardTwo general roles for nutrients are to provide_____and______ . Nutrients required in small amounts that often assist in enzyme function are called _______. Nutrients that are elements are called________ . Nutrients that cannot be synthesized by the body are called_______ nutrients.arrow_forwardVitamin D deficiency can often be found as a single nutrient deficiency, that is, in an otherwise well-nourished person. Which of the following is the most likely reason? Question 100 options: a) Most vitamin D in the body does not come from natural sources in food, so access to food is not an important determinant of vitamin D status b) The individual has decreased intrinsic factor in the stomach c) Diets containing sufficient nutrients to promote growth can increase the requirements for vitamin D d) The content of vitamin D in foods depends on the soil in which the food was grownarrow_forward
