Chapter 3.5, Problem 105P
Magnetic tape under a tension of 10 N at D passes around the guide pulleys and through the erasing head at C at constant speed. As a result of a small amount of friction in the bearings of the pulleys, the tape at E is under a tension of 11 N. Determine the tension T in the supporting spring at B. The plate lies in a horizontal plane and is mounted on a precision needle bearing at A.

The 10 N cylinder moves in a friction tube. Spring constants are k1 = 150 N / m and k2 = 200 N / m. When the system is at rest, d = 0.5 m. The system rotates around a fixed z-axis. In the case where d = 0.12 m, what is the coefficient of friction for the cylinder to have a constant velocity of 9.825 m / s?
The uniform rod has a weight W and rests on a smooth peg at C and against a wall at A. The coefficients of friction at A and C are equal to μ = 0.3. Find the ratio L/a when motion is impending.
The hand brake for a bicycle is shown. Portions DE and FG are free to rotate on bolt A which is screwed into the frame BC of the bicycle. The brake is actuated by a shielded cable where T1 is applied to point E and T2 is applied to point G. A spring having 40 N compressive force is placed between points E and G so that the brake stays open when it is not being used. Assume the change in the spring's force is negligible when the brake is actuated to produce the F = 100 N forces at points D and F. Determine the necessary cable forces T1 in N.
