Answer to Problem 1RQ

The method of determining the age of one layer of sedimentary rock as compared to other layers is known as the relative dating. Relative dating plays a significant role in Geographical studies.

Explanation of Solution

Rocks formed by the several layers of sediments one over another in different time periods is known as sedimentary rocks. It is an extremely difficult task to determine the exact age of any layer or any sediment. But, the age of one layer can be determined with respect to another layer. This kind of dating method is known as relative dating.

The principles used by the relative dating method is given below.

  1.  Original Horizontally
  2.  Superposition
  3.  Cross-cutting
  4.  Inclusion
  5.  Lateral continuity
  6.  Faunal succession

Conclusion:

Therefore, the method of determining the age of one layer of sedimentary rock as compared to other layers is known as the relative dating. Relative dating plays a significant role in Geographical studies.
