The principle of superposition is that each new
(a) sedimentary layer is older than the layer above.
(b) sedimentary layer is younger than the layer below.
(c) layer of sediment is laid down nearly horizontally.
(d) layer of sediment is laid down accordingly.
The correct option for the statement “The principle of superposition is that each new”.
Answer to Problem 1RAT
The correct option for the statement, “The principle of superposition is that each new” is option (b).
Explanation of Solution
Relative dating is the method of estimating the age of bodies and objects in comparison to others. It is not necessary to evaluate the absolute age of the object. It is the ordering of the rocks in sequence by their relative ages. The principle of superposition is one of the principles of relative dating according to which, each layer is deposited on pre-existing layers by pressing them. New layers are found always on top of the sedimentary rocks, and old layers are always below the new layers. So accordingly, the oldest rock would be at the bottom, whereas newly formed rock will be at the top. It is very similar to the recycling of newspapers where the older newspaper is found below, the newer and more recent pages. Therefore, sedimentary layers are younger than the layer below.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the correct option for the statement, “The principle of superposition is that each new” is option (b).
