Concept explainers
The cause of rise in sea level and the possibility of rise in future.
Answer to Problem 19TE
The rise in atmospheric temperature is the major cause for rise in sea level and it will continue in future also.
Explanation of Solution
The rising level of temperature in the atmosphere due to global warming is the cause of the increase in sea level. The warm temperature leads to the expansion of oceans. It also leads to the melting of glaciers and ice caps. The water formed by the melting of ice increases the quantity of water in the oceans, raising the sea level.
The atmospheric temperature is increasing day by day due to the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and many more, resulting in global warming. Since most of the products we use now contain carbon, the emission of these gases only increases. Even if the carbon emissions are cut, the carbon already emitted into the atmosphere is enough for the temperature increase. Thus, the sea level will continue rising.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the rise in atmospheric temperature is the major cause of the sea-level rise, and it will also continue in the future.
