The formation of the supercontinent Pangaea
(a) resulted from the collision of all major landmasses.
(b) produced widespread mountains building in the Himalayas.
(c) resulted in extensive volcanic activity and flood basalts.
(d) All of these.
The correct option for the statement “The formation of the supercontinent of Pangaea”.
Answer to Problem 8RAT
The correct option for the statement “The formation of the supercontinent of Pangaea” is option (a).
Explanation of Solution
In the Permian period, which was the end of the Palaeozoic era, a collision took place between all the huge landmass of the world, which ultimately resulted in the formation of Pangaea. During the formation of this supercontinent, many consequences occurred. Due to the collision, along with the edges of the continents, inner regions were also affected badly. Like mountains were lifted from the middle, that started to act as a barrier for the wind to enter the inner region of the continent. This led the inland areas of Pangaea to become dry and arid. Later, glaciers started to melt at a higher rate, and sea was also lowered, and ultimately caused the death of most of the habitat.
Conclusion:
The correct option for the statement “The formation of the supercontinent of Pangaea” is option (a).
