Concept explainers
To analyze:
The two groups of invertebrate chordates based on their feeding pattern.
Introduction:
Tunicates and lancelets are two groups of chordates. Both possess the four derived characters of chordates during their development. The adult lancelets retain all the characters, but adult tunicates retain only one that is presence of pharyngeal slits.
Explanation of Solution
Lancelets are filter feeders that extract small particles suspended in the water, and live buried in the sand of marine waters.
Tunicates are filter feeders that extract small particles suspended in the water, and live a sessile way of life at the bottom of marine waters.
Both lancelets and tunicates are filter feeders. Lancelets live buried in the sand at the bottom of the seas, while tunicates are sessile in a dark or shaded location.
