Concept explainers
To review:
The reason as to why the ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) genes of chloroplast, nucleus, and mitochondria are not closely related in corn.
Given:
Gene tree showing the evolutionary relationship among rRNA gene sequences from nuclear genomes of human, corn, prokaryotic Archaean, a proteobacterium, cyanobacterium, mitochondrial, and chloroplast genomes.
Introduction:
According to the endosymbiotic theory, certain cellular organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts are descendants of prokaryotic cells engulfed by an ancestor eukaryote. These bacteria-resisted digestion became part of the modern eukaryotic cell and performed vital functions of the cell such as oxidative phosphorylation and photosynthesis.

- What is a gene? How many oxons are in the basic structure of a genearrow_forwardThe genome of D. melanogaster consists of approximately 1.7 * 108 base pairs. DNA synthesis occurs at a rate of 30 base pairs per second. In the early embryo, the entire genome is replicated in five minutes. How many bidirectional origins of synthesis are required to accomplish this feat?arrow_forwardDo most cells contain complete copies of an organism’s DNA? Do most cells express all of the genes contained in their DNA?arrow_forward
