Concept explainers
What is a mineral?
The definition of a mineral.
Answer to Problem 4RQ
A solid which is naturally made and is crystalline in nature, with a definite chemical arrangement is called a mineral.
Explanation of Solution
Minerals are found naturally and cannot be created in a laboratory. It is made up of atoms that are arranged in a definite pattern. For example same type of mineral will always have the same pattern. A mineral is with a definite chemical arrangement also. This means that similar minerals will have the same chemical arrangement.
Minerals found in rocks and in dietary supplements are similar yet different. The mineral in rocks is naturally occurring. In contrast, dietary minerals are human-made compounds that contain elements necessary for life functions.
Conclusion:
Therefore, a solid which is naturally made and is crystalline in nature, with a definite chemical arrangement is called a mineral.
